Swiss defeat US in hockey friendly

The puck only hit the back of the Swiss net twice

Switzerland have beaten the United States 5-2 in their final test game in Zurich-Kloten before they host the world ice hockey championship that opens on Friday.

The Swiss did not start well with the Americans taking a two-goal lead in the first period.

But they came back with more discipline in defence and two goals within the space of 64 seconds from Ryan Gardner and Thomas Ziegler helped the Swiss turn the game around.

Coach Ralph Krueger, who has been behind the Swiss bench since 1998, was pleased with the game as a whole but admitted mistakes had been made in the first period.

“We gave them much too much room and they capitalised on that. But then we played with more discipline and took our chances. The [players’] reaction was much more important than the result,” he commented.

The Swiss will play France in their opening game on Friday evening in Bern.
