“On behalf of the Federal Council and the entire Swiss population, President Leuthard expresses their deep condolences to the Polish people, the parliament and authorities,” the economics ministry said in a statement.

Leuthard holds the economics portfolio in the seven-member cabinet.

Foreign Minister Micheline Calmy-Rey said: “I regret most deeply the loss of the Polish people. I met Mr. Kaczynski in 2007 as president. My thoughts are also with the families and relatives of those who lost their lives... I want to express to the Polish people the friendship and solidarity of Switzerland in this tragic hour.”

Calmy-Rey expressed her personal condolences in a letter to her Polish counterpart, Radoslaw Sikorski, the foreign ministry said.
