Del Ponte believes Mladic will be arrested
Swiss lawyer Carla Del Ponte has said she is certain the former Bosnian Serb general Ratko Mladic will be arrested.
Del Ponte, the former chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, told the Swiss newspaper Südostschweiz am Sonntag that the Serbs had shown a “clear desire” to move in this direction.
It was Del Ponte’s first Swiss interview since the arrest in July of former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic after 13 years on the run. He is now on trial for war crimes.
“After my departure from the International Criminal Tribunal in December 2007 I was frustrated to have not obtained his arrest,” she said.
“Today I am very happy. This shows that our strategy was correct.”
Del Ponte was in the tribunal post from 1999-2007 and is currently the Swiss Ambassador to Argentina.
