Swiss skis to first podium finish
Nadja Kamer of Switzerland came second in Saturday’s World Cup downhill in Haus im Ennstal, Austria, for her first World Cup podium placing.
For the winner, the American Lindsey Vonn, it was the fourth straight victory in the discipline this season and the second in two days.
Vonn sped down the shortened Krummholz course under difficult snowy and foggy conditions in 1 minute, 9.12 seconds. Kamer was 0.14 seconds behind and Ingrid Jacquemod of France was another 0.02 seconds back in third.
Vonn was in control all the way and finished strongly to beat Kamer, who started first and had better conditions.
Kamer, whose previous best was fourth last season, was delighted with her race.
“It was totally unexpected especially after finishing ninth yesterday. I didn’t expect to have the potential for such a place,” she said. “It’s all the more significant as I’m behind Lindsey Vonn, who is just unbeatable.”
The race was postponed several times due to fog and organisers shortened the course from an initial 2,639 metres to 1,765m.
A women’s super-G race in Haus im Ennstal is scheduled for Sunday.
