Swiss teams disappoint in Uefa Cup

Young Boys Bern scored a late equaliser in the first leg of the Uefa Cup's opening round on Thursday night while Zurich and Bellinzona both lost.

Young Boys couldn’t hold on to a 1-0 lead against Bruges and finished 2-2. After the match riots outside the Stade de Suisse in Bern resulted in rubber bullets being fired and three head injuries.

Zurich were beaten 3-1 by Milan in the San Siro stadium, and Bellinzona lost an action-packed home game to 17-time Turkish champions Galatasaray 4-3.

All three second legs will be played on October 2.

The Uefa Cup is the second most important international competition for European football clubs after the Uefa Champions League, for which Basel is Switzerland’s sole representative.
