Saturday's win marked a welcome break from the past four consecutive defeats, which left Switzerland lingering at the bottom of the league table.

A strong first-half placed the Swiss team in a strong position against their Dutch rivals, who had a surprise win over basketball leaders Turkey on Wednesday.

However, the Swiss side still have a long way to go to pull up their rankings ahead of the championships in Sweden in 2003.
