Wawrinka advances in Rome

Swiss number two tennis player Stanislas Wawrinka (ATP 26) has fought his way to the quarterfinals in Rome after defeating Robin Soderling (ATP 7) 6-3 6-2.

Wawrinka will next face either tournament favorite Rafael Nadal or Victor Hanescu of Romania, who met in the night match at the Foro Italico.

In the other quarter finals of the Rome Masters, second-ranked Novak Djokovic will get a chance to avenge a recent loss when he plays Fernando Verdasco on Thursday.

Seventh-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga also advanced by beating Colombian qualifier Santiago Giraldo 6-3, 6-4, while Ernests Gulbis of Latvia, who upset number one Roger Federer in the opening round, scored a victory over Italian wild card Filippo Volandri.

Gulbis will next meet Spain’s Feliciano Lopez, who advanced when 11th-seeded Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia appeared to aggravate a muscle problem in his side during the
pre-match warmup.
