Wawrinka wins fourth-round epic in New York

The 25th seed dispatched the 20th seed – and the last remaining local player in the men's tournament – two days after defeating one of the favourites, Britain’s Andy Murray.

Wawrinka, an Olympic doubles gold medallist with Roger Federer, now meets 12th seed Mikhail Youzhny from Russia, who earlier in the day beat Spain’s Tommy Robredo in four sets. The winner of that match could meet top seed Rafael Nadal in the semifinal.

Federer, seeded two, plays Robin Söderling from Sweden on Wednesday evening for a place in the semifinal. It is the first time two Swiss have ever been in a grand slam quarterfinal.
