Instrumental. Two decades ago the Küng siblings from Appenzell, eastern Switzerland, started out as an ensemble in the customary, local line-up of two violins, cello, dulcimer and double bass. These days their youngest family members continue to carry the torch. And they were lucky enough to refine their craftsmanship under late, legendary thoroughbred musician Josef "Hornsepp" Dobler and eminent notable Noldi Alder. Nevertheless, the force behind Nüdallgraaduus (Don't Keep Straight Ahead) was musicologist Roman Rutishauser, who assisted the quintet in rearranging eight essential pieces from the classic volume of Appenzell music "Ufmache wie früehner". The semi-professional Küng siblings merge these ancient styles with modernist influences in a respectful yet ironic way. No wonder their undogmatic artistry has resulted in steady airplay in Switzerland and concert tours as far afield as China and Japan.
