The Piccolo Shop

Where Basel tunes in for the carnival season.

In the past, drums were the dominant sound during Basel’s carnival. When women started to participate in the 1970s, they mostly played the piccolo, since the big drums were too heavy for many of them to carry. Every year, a few weeks before the carnival begins, numerous carnival groups go to Erwin Oesch’s wind instrument shop to get their piccolos tuned. (Michele Andina, swissinfo.ch)
