A detailed inventory of Switzerland’s 129 cable car systems is now available to the public on the internet.

Created by the Federal Culture Office, the website provides details technical, cultural, historical and economic information of all of Switzerland’s cable cars, including photos and a country map.
The culture office said the site would be a reference service for local authorities, tourists and history buffs alike with an interest in Switzerland’s cable cars.
Switzerland pioneered the use of cable cars in the late 19th century when increasing numbers of tourists visiting the Alps created a need for a means of transport to high peaks.
The first tourist funicular was inaugurated in 1879 at the Giessbach Hotel on Lake Brienz, while the first cable car transporting passengers was installed at Grindelwald leading to the Wetterhorn in 1908.
