Two people were killed when a light aircraft collided with a bridge at the end of a runway in southeastern Switzerland on Saturday evening. The aircraft rolled over, became entangled in cables from the steel bridge and burst into flames.

The plane was taking part in an airshow in Arosa, canton Graubünden, according to Swiss public television. The 73-year-old pilot and a female passenger, 69, died in the accident said the cantonal police.

The accident happened as the plane tried to take off and hit the bridge at the end of the runway. The fire was extinguished and the victims were taken out of the aircraft by the Arosa fire service using cutting tools, but the woman was already dead.

The pilot was rushed to a hospital in Zurich, but died later from injuries.

The Federal Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the cause of the fatal accident.
