British film success in Nyon

The British film "The Lie of the Land", made by Molly Dineen, has been awarded the Grand Prix at the Visions du réel documentary film festival in the Swiss town of Nyon.

The festival, which ended on Wednesday, showed 155 films from 36 countries and attracted more than 28,000 visitors.

Dineen’s film deals with the debate over the subject of fox hunting. The jury praised the directness of her style, saying this made the characters touching. The prize is worth SFr20,000 ($19,850).

Other major winners were “Nuit de Chine”, a French-Italian-Chinese co-production about modern China, and the Franco-Russian film “Entre ours et loup” about the trial of a human rights activist.

Two Swiss co-productions, “La mère”, the portrait of a Russian mother, and “Témoin indésirable”, about a journalist in Bolivia, also won prizes. A Swiss, Yves Scagliola, earned a special mention from the jury for “The beast within”, a look at masculinity.
