The Berne Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1877. With the season 1935/36, the orchestra started inviting renowned guest conductors like Bruno Walter, Wilhelm Furtwängler, Ernest Ansermet and later, Hans Knappertsbusch, Ferenc Fricsay, Rafael Kubelik and others. Between 1990 and 2004 its principal conductor was Dmitrij Kitajenko from St. Petersburg. With the season 2005/06 Andrey Boreyko has taken up his function as the new principal conductor of the B.S.O.
