The Basel Symphony Orchestra numbers among Switzerland's most renowed orchestras. At the beginning of the 1997/98 season it was formed from the fusion of two outstanding and richly traditional Basel orchestras: the Basel Symphony Orchestra and the Basel Radio Symphony Orchestra. The principal conductors included Felix Weingartner, Hans Münch, Hermann Scherchen, Rolf Liebermann, Nello Santi a.o. (see link).
