Film festival announces Golden Eye awards
A film by a director from Kazakhstan won the Zurich film festival's Golden Eye award for the best debut feature film on Saturday.
The prize went to Tulpan, directed by Sergey Dvortsevoy. An international co-production with Swiss involvement, it tells the story of a sailor who wants to become a shepherd.
The best documentary award was won by Blind Loves, directed by the Slovak Juraj Lehotsky, which looks at the way in which a blind couple experience their relationship.
The public selected The World Is Big And Salvation Lurks Around The Corner, made by Stephan Komandarev of Bulgaria, which was competing in the feature film section.
The Variety award, given by the US magazine of the same name, was won by Moscow, Belgium by Christophe van Rompaey of Belgium.
The feature film jury was chaired by US actor and director Peter Fonda, and the documentary jury by the Swiss Christian Frei. It was the first time that the juries had been split at the Zurich festival, which was being held for the fourth time.
The festival also awarded a Golden Eye to veteran filmmaker Constantin Costa-Gavras for his lifetime achievement.
