One of Russia’s leading and most prolific contemporary artists is once again exhibiting in Berne – the city where his international career was launched in 1985.

Born in Ukraine in 1933, Ilya Kabakov is a painter and sculptor specialising in installation art, an art form which has no definite boundaries but is an environment created for a specific site. The artist uses any combination of materials he feels is most appropriate to express a concept or evoke a feeling.

In Kabakov’s exhibition at the Fine Arts Museum, the installations combine the power of suggestions and allusions, often ironic, about life in Russia under communism and in the immediate aftermath.

It consists of 50 installations with water colours, drawings, photographs and wooden scale models. The exhibition ends June 25.
