Largest body of Erni works lands in Lucerne

The most comprehensive collection of works by one of Switzerland's most renowned artists, Hans Erni, opens in Lucerne on Sunday.

The exhibition at the Lucerne Museum of Art includes 250 works that Erni produced over 80 years of his life. The Swiss artist turned 100 years old in February.

Curators say a 90-metre long mural called “Switzerland – holiday country of the nations” will be displayed in an interconnected manner unseen since Erni first produced the piece in 1939.

President Hans-Rudolf Merz paid tribute to the artist’s career and ethics earlier this year, saying Erni’s work “transcends all limits”.

The exhibition, Hans Erni – Retrospective for his 100th birthday, runs until October 4, 2009.
