Hingis’s mother confirms split

Martina Hingis's mother says she no longer considers herself to be her daughter's trainer. In an interview with the Tagesanzeiger newspaper, Melanie Molitor confirmed that she had not been involved professionally with Hingis for four weeks.

Molitor insisted that her personal relationship with the Swiss world number one had not been damaged by their professional split. She also argued that too much was being read into her daughter’s recent poor form.

“Going two months without winning a tournament is not the end of the world,” the 43-year-old coach told the Zurich paper. “There have also been spells in the past when she has gone months without winning a title. Nowadays you can’t win every single tournament.”

Molitor added that she had not ruled out working with Hingis in the future, but said she did not know if she would be joining up with her daughter for the forthcoming tournaments in Berlin, Rome and Paris.

As well as taking a break from her mother, Hingis is also reconsidering the role of Molitor’s partner, Mario Widmer. The tennis star’s former manager confirmed on Wednesday that he would only be acting as her advisor for the time being.
