Peaceful anniversary Zurich Street Parade marks 25 year milestone

The organisers call the event the “most colourful house and techno parade in the world”

Around 900,000 people thronged Zurich streets to celebrate the city’s 25 Street Parade on Saturday. In light of recent terror attacks in neighbouring countries, there was also an increased police presence.

The event is widely described as the biggest outdoor techno party in Europe. Despite the large number of attendees, health and safety incidents were down: 690 people were treated by first aid helpers, a 23% drop compared with the previous year. Most were cuts and scratches.

The festivities started with a warm up at 1pm, where loud speakers in different areas are synced up. After the 2.4 km (1.5 mile) parade route, around 200 DJs entertained dancers until early on Sunday.

Police tweeted at the start of the evening that the Street Parade had largely gone by peacefully. Around 50 people were arrested for offences including pickpocketing, drugs, sexual harassment and use of counterfeit money.

The slogan for this anniversary year was “unique”.

The organisersexternal link call the event the “most colourful house and techno parade in the world” and thanked revellers afterwards, with the message: “Our wish: Love, peace, tolerance and respect all over the world”.

The Street Parade caused quite a stir in the normally staid financial centre of Zurich when it started with 1,000 party-goers and six floats.
