Summer Games named as Oscar entry

The feature film Summer Games - Giochi d’Estate - has been chosen as Switzerland’s entry at next year’s Academy Awards.

The film by Swiss-Italian director Rolando Colla tells the summer holiday story of a teenage couple trying to come to terms with difficult relationships with their parents.

The Swiss entry will benefit from a SFr60,000 ($66,036) financial contribution for a promotional campaign, according to the Federal Culture Office.

Summer Games, Colla’s fourth feature-length film, was chosen by independent experts as well as the public in northwestern Switzerland.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Nominations will release the shortlist of nominees on January 24 and the winner will be announced at the 84th awards ceremony in Los Angeles on February 26.

Journey of Hope by Xavier Koller was the most recent Swiss entry to win an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 1991.
