Swiss Radio International has begun broadcasting its English-language programme via satellite to Asia, replacing its short wave broadcasts.

The programme is now broadcast on the AsiaStar platform, one of the WorldSpace satellite systems, using the east, west and south beams and covering much of the continent.

WorldSpace was founded in 1990 to provide direct satellite delivery of digital audio and multimedia services primarily to Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Two geostationary satellites, AfriStar and AsiaStar are currently functioning and another, Ameristar, should be launched next year.

The broadcast is relayed in digital quality output and the price of receivers starts at $50 (SFr83).

Swiss Radio International is pursuing short wave output to Africa and South America until 2004. The management is considering broadcasts via the other two satellites after this date.
