The Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETHZ) has climbed the ladder and now ranks at 18th in the world, remaining Europe's highest-placed non-British institution.

The Times study showed Switzerland had seven institutions in the top 200, with the Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL) leading the rest of the best at 32nd, climbing ten places since last year.

Zurich University lost nine places and now ranks 101st best university.

The top 17 slots went to United States-based and British institutions, with Cambridge knocking Harvard off top slot.
