The French-Swiss Radio Light Orchestra (LS 4/1975)

The French-Swiss Radio Light Orchestra also known as "Groupe Instrumental Romand" was formed in 1961 to meet the increasingly varied musical needs of Switzerland's French-language radio and television.

It is made up of 11 internationally-known performers who also compose and arrange much of their own material. Within the orchestra itself are eight smaller formations including a jazz group, a trio and a saxophone sextet. The "Groupe Instrumental Romand" is under the direction of Roger Volet, and co-leaders are Luc Hoffmann and Stuff Combe.

Background information

Switzerland is a small alpine nation shaped and influenced by great cultural cross-currents that have swept through Europe over centuries. Out of elements of diversity, the people of this country have forged a distinctly Swiss identity. And music is one of its most eloquent expressions. "Musica Helvetica" explores different facets of music in Switzerland from its earliest beginnings to the latest works of modern Swiss composers, from folk music to rock and jazz.
