UEFA announces cup football fixtures

Club directors prepare for battle Keystone

Basel and Lausanne have been handed what looks like an easy start to their UEFA cup campaigns. Basel have been drawn against the San Marino side, Folgore, in the competition's first qualifying round. Lausanne has been pitted against Ireland's Cork City.

It's the first time a club from San Marino has been allowed to play in the tournament. The last time Switzerland played San Marino at national level, the Swiss were the convincing winners - beating the tiny country 4-0 and 7-0 during the qualifying stages for the 1992 European Championships.

Lausanne will face a slightly more experienced side when they meet Cork City. But Cork too have depended on the small size of their national league to qualify on six occasions for the European Cup, reaching the second round on just one occasion.

The matches will be played over two legs in August.

FC Zurich will join the competition in the second round of qualifying, while the Swiss champions, FC Sankt Gallen, will begin their European campaign in the final qualifying round of the Champions League.
