The Festival said in a statement that 62-year-old Pereira, who was born in Vienna, would sign a five-year contract and start his new job by October 2011.

He will succeed Jürgen Flimm, who is leaving Salzburg to become the general manager of Berlin's Staatsoper opera house.

The renowned Salzburg Festival attracts world-class orchestras and classical music artists every year.

Last June Andreas Homoki was appointed to succeed Pereira, who has held the Zurich post since 1991.

The Zurich Opera House seats 1,100 people and is one of the leading music theatres in Switzerland.
