Easter eggs come in all sizes and colours in Nyon

Eggs made of stone, porcelain and of course, real eggs, will be on colourful display at the annual Easter Egg Market in Nyon on April 7 and 8.

About 50 artists and craftsmen from across Europe will demonstrate various egg decorating techniques, using various materials from modelling clay and gouache to lace and acrylic.

The organisers of the market – now in its 22nd year – say they want to keep alive the tradition of turning eggs into works of art. Visitors to the town are invited to buy or just browse at the popular event.

To mark the occasion, Nyon is putting its own Easter touches to the town fountains.

Nyon is worth a visit on any given day of the year. The old Roman town enjoys a splendid location on the Lake Geneva shore between Lausanne and Geneva.

Unlike other medieval towns, medieval Nyon was built on top of the former Roman military colony. The streets of the old town still reveal the Roman checkerboard plan.

Although few Roman or medieval structures have remained intact, the castle (closed for renovations), one of the gateways from the Middle Ages, vestiges of the 13th century fortifications and Roman columns are worth seeing.

One to two-hour guided tours of the town in French are held every Thursday, Friday and Saturday, beginning at 10am. They cost SFr10 ($6) per person – reservations are not necessary. Groups and tours in English are available with prior notice.
