Swiss culture centre gets new boss

Dieter Bachmann is planning an exhibition on Italian emigration to Switzerland Keystone

The author and former journalist Dieter Bachmann has taken over as director of the Swiss cultural institute in Rome.

The centre is a showcase for Swiss culture as well as a means of promoting cultural exchanges between Switzerland and Italy. Bachmann says one of his first projects will be a week of music, theatre, literature and exhibitions beginning on November 11.

He is also planning a series of weekly events at which musicians will perform, authors will read from their works, and Swiss films will be screened.

Another project is a photograph exhibition about Italian emigration to Switzerland. “That will be an expression of gratitude to Italy for the way in which it has enriched Swiss culture,” says Bachmann. “The exhibition will document nearly a century of Italian emigration.”

Born in Basel in 1940, Bachmann has been a regular visitor to Italy since his teens. “I know it well,” he said, “and more important, it’s a country which I love.”
