Ammann suffers setback in Four Hills event

Switzerland’s Simon Ammann has come fourth in the first competition of the Four Hills ski-jumping tournament.

The four-time Olympic gold medal winner finished behind Austria’s Thomas Morgenstern, Matti Hautamäki of Finland and another Austrian, Manuel Fettner, in Oberstdorf on Wednesday.

Ammann totalled 259.8 points – nearly 30 points behind Morgenstern. Experts say it might be difficult for the Swiss star to make up for the setback in the three remaining competitions.

Ammann said his main goal was to win the tournament because it is the only major title that the Swiss Athlete of the Year has not won.

The Four Hills tournament, taking place in Austria and Germany until January 6, is considered one of the most important ski-jumping events of the season.
