Federer goes on, Wawrinka goes out in Paris
Roger Federer on Wednesday endured a second set tie-break to defeat Robin Söderling of Sweden 6-4, 7-6 (9:7) at the 2008 Paris Masters tennis tournament.
Federer, the world’s number two player, had received a bye in the first round of the last major tournament of the year’s ATP season.
He completed the evening match in just under one hour and 15 minutes with ten aces and no double faults.
The 27-year-old Swiss will face 25th-ranked Marin Čilić of Croatia in the third round.
Stanislas Wawrinka, seeded 12th, had also received a bye but made an early exit on Wednesday after losing to Czech Tomas Berdych 6-3, 7-5.
Defending champion David Nalbandian of Argentina, who Federer defeated in his hometown of Basel last Sunday, and Spaniard Rafael Nadal, the world’s top-ranked player, both advanced on Wednesday.
Federer lost his number one ranking to Nadal earlier this year but holds tennis’s earnings record, with more than $43.5 million (SFr49.4 million) in prize money since he turned pro in 1998.
