Audience to help choose Oscar entry

For the third time, a special cinema week is being held to determine which film will represent Switzerland at next year’s Academy Awards.

From September 19-24, cinema-goers will be able to watch candidate films in the cinemas of Délémont, canton Jura, and schools in Jura and the Bernese Jura.

A jury of independent experts chosen by the Federal Culture Office will then make its decision on the evening of September 24, with the public having an advisory vote.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Nominations will release the shortlist of nominees on January 24 and the winners will be announced at the 84th awards ceremony in Los Angeles on February 26.

No Swiss film has been nominated for 20 years, since Xavier Koller’s immigrant drama Journey of Hope was named Best Foreign Language Film in 1991. Koller is also the most recent Swiss actor or director to pick up an Oscar.
