In Group E, the Swiss side beat Romanian side CFR Cluj 1-0. The Romanians will now finish bottom of the group.
Federico Almerares’ 15th-minute strike proved decisive for the Swiss side.
Still, the three points are unlikely to be enough for Basel to reach the round of 16, according to the Uefa website. That’s because AS Roma’s 3-2 victory against FC Bayern München means Basel will need a victory against Bayern combined with a Cluj win over Roma.
However, Basel are now guaranteed at least third spot, which would yield a Uefa Europa League berth.
