The three cities, the largest in Switzerland, will present an exhibit focusing on water and the quality of urban life, it was announced in a joint media release on Monday.

Cities will be able to exhibit alongside countries in a new feature being introduced at the 2010 world exposition.

The overarching theme of the global fair is the effect of growing urbanisation on the planet.

Talks are underway with the Expo organisers to determine the size and location of the pavilion, dubbed "Basel, Geneva, Zurich. Better water - best urban life". The project should be privately funded.
