Einsiedeln displays world’s largest nativity scene

The Einsiedeln cathedral provides one of the most stunning backdrops for a Christmas market. Einsiedeln Tourism

The complete story of Christmas is told through the world's largest nativity scene at the Diorama in Einsiedeln.

From December 2 to 10, more than 450 colourful and detailed figurines placed in front of landscape paintings will tell the story from the birth of baby Jesus to the exile in Egypt.

At the same time, the local museum, “Chärnehus”, is putting on a special exhibition of nativity scenes, big and small, as well as examples from the past and present.

Both exhibitions coincide with Einsiedeln’s Christmas market, held in the square in front of the imposing cathedral. With the cathedral’s twin spires looming above, it is considered to be one of the most impressive squares in Switzerland.

Artisans will be selling their handicrafts at the market and showing how they are made.

Concerts have also become a tradition during the market. Ranging from classical to gospel, the sounds of Christmas will ring out each evening in the marketplace, cathedral or other venues around the town.

The cathedral is Switzerland’s most important place of pilgrimage. The church houses a wooden statue known as the Black Virgin, which became a sacred object in the late Middle Ages.

The Christmas exhibition at the Chärnehus can be seen each weekend and public holiday until January 1. The Diorama is also open between Christmas and New Year.
