Federer sails through first Wimbledon round

Federer admitted he was very nervous ahead of the match AFP

Swiss tennis star Roger Federer has won his first round match against Kazakhstan's Mikhail Kukushkin at the Wimbledon tennis tournament in England.

Federer defeated Kukushkin in three straight sets on Tuesday: 7-6, 6-4, 6-2.

“I am much more relaxed than after my first round last year,” said Federer after the match. In 2010 he got off to a shaky start and only made it to the quarterfinals.

The world number three is bidding for his seventh Wimbledon championship and a 17th major title overall. His last Wimbledon win was in 2009.

“I want to do so well here at Wimbledon because it’s some of the big highlights for me during the season, and I’ve won the tournament six times. That’s why I’ll always play with some pressure here at Wimbledon just because of the occasion and what it means to me really. I was nervous today,” Federer said.

Federer will face France’s Adrian Mannarino on Thursday.

Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka is also off to a good start. The 14th-seeded player tidily defeated Italy’s Potito Starace 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 on Monday.

Wawrinka’s next match is against Italy’s Simone Bolelli.
