Out & About in Switzerland: Appenzell is on the move

The festival will provide another occasion for Appenzellers to wear their Sunday best Keystone

The Appenzell region is holding a three day festival over the first weekend in September. "Appenzellerfest 2000" is rather hard to pin down because it's taking place in several villages and towns connected by the Appenzeller railway.

Local trains, renamed “Festival Trams” for the occasion, will transport visitors to various cultural, sporting and musical events in the five communities stretching from Teufen (just south of St Gallen) through the town of Appenzell and westwards to Gonten.

It will be a journey through Appenzell past and present, including a rally of old fire engines, a scything competition, a tour of an Appenzeller farm, traditional dancing as well as rock climbing and inline skating races.

There’ll also be art exhibitions, theatre acts, petting zoos and a special exhibition for horse lovers.

For musical entertainment, yodellers, chamber music orchestras and techno DJ’s will take their turns on the four stages being erected in the town of Appenzell.
