The Public Council ensures close contact between programme-makers and their audience.

It advises swissinfo managers on all matters related to the swissinfo service and provides support in the form of observations, suggestions and ideas. The Public Council also undertakes regular reviews of the development, format and success of SRG SSR's international service remit.

Why do I serve on swissinfo's Public Council? Because my belief in the power of symbolic representation is even stronger than my belief in the power of information. And what better representative could we have than swissinfo? In a variety of forms and languages, this voice of Switzerland has been reaching out to the world since the 1930s. It represents values – multilingualism and the coexistence of different cultures – that are very important to me.

Its professional multimedia offering combines the highest journalistic standards with a selection of relevant issues. And it is all offered in nine world languages for a broad audience with an interest in Switzerland.

I am involved in the Public Council because the Council's discussions help to maintain and improve the high journalistic quality of the multimedia platform, and because I am a firm believer in the long-term potential of public service broadcasting.

Walter Spahni
Communications consultant, Spahni Communication, Bern is Switzerland's multimedia gateway to the world. It uses new and future communications technologies and, with its nine languages, reaches a large share of the global audience.

Reinhard Süess
Member of the Council of the Swiss Abroad, Chairman of the Swiss Club in Kassel, Architect, employed at Hessische Baumanagement is the only medium that gives Switzerland global in our national languages and in the major world languages. There is also a special service for the 700,000 or so Swiss people living abroad, some 76,000 of whom are in Germany.
As a member of both the Council of Swiss Expatriates and the Public Council, I am committed to widening the use of among Swiss expatriates everywhere.

Walter Suter
Former Swiss Ambassador ombudsman is the only public-sector medium in Switzerland that is geared specifically to an international audience. It plays a unique role, objectively offering a realistic picture of Switzerland to the rest of the world. Since I attach great value to this outstanding work in the interests of our country I am delighted that, alongside the other members of the Public Council, I am able to support and work alongside swissinfo in a spirit of constructive criticism.
