Eight dead, 29 wounded in Baghdad bombings

BAGHDAD (Reuters) – Two separate bombings in Baghdad’s mainly Sunni Muslim Adhamiya district on Sunday killed a total of eight people and wounded 29, police said. One of the blasts was caused by a bomb in a parked car, which killed 5 people and wounded 15. The second bomb, which killed three people and wounded 14, was attached to a motorcycle, police said. Such attacks bear the hallmarks of Sunni Islamist insurgent groups such as al Qaeda, which have often attacked Shi’ite targets, but have also been known to attack Sunnis they perceive as being allied to Iraq’s Shi’ite-led government. Violence has fallen sharply in Iraq in the past two years, but bombings, shootings and kidnappings remain common. (Writing by Mohammed Abbas: Editing by Andrew Dobbie)
