Secret services ties to South Africa (2003)

Keystone

Swiss Radio International reports on a probe in 2003 into the Swiss secret service's ties to its South African counterpart from 1977 to the late 1990s. (Length: 2.57 minutes)

Links between the Swiss and South African secret service have been the subject of various parliamentary commissions. A 2002 probe cleared the Swiss service of illegal dealings, but criticised its ties to the apartheid regime.

A follow-up report claimed successive Swiss governments knew of the service’s alleged activities, and did nothing about it. Commission leader Alexander Tschäppät tells Swiss Radio International that under current law dealings with other countries are now more transparent.

Broadcast in October 2003.
