Chiudinelli, ranked 160 in the world, won Thursday’s match at Flushing Meadows 2-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4, 6-3, spurred on after winning a tie break in the second set.
The 27-year-old Basel player last reached the third round of the tournament three years ago. He has made steady progress in the past ten months, moving up from a world ranking of 884. His win at Flushing Meadows should project him up around another 30 places.
He faces another Russian, world number eight Nikolay Davydenko, on Saturday.
A lacklustre Patty Schnyder was beaten easily in straight sets 7-5, 6-2 by 42-ranked Sara Errani of Italy. Schnyder, ranked 19, had reached the quarter-finals of last year’s US Open and had defeated Errani in their last meeting in Madrid in the spring.
