Gotthard: Five days to go – the departure
An office is an office, but at least there’s light and air. From Monday I’ll be on the AlpTransit construction site, with a hardhat instead of a computer, miners instead of colleagues.
When you want to reach a goal, you have to adapt and improvise. This is a valid saying, but what is my real reason for doing this? Do I want to immerse myself in a world that is totally strange to me so I can say, “I was there”? Do I want to explain this world to our readers so they can say “I saw it through Luigi’s eyes”? Or do I, for once in my life, want to concentrate more on my emotions than on the facts and figures which are usually found in my articles?
I don’t know and now I’m leaving my desk for the construction site. The rest will come by itself. Perhaps, as in a song about miners by the Italian singer Davide Van De Sfroos, I will be able to say: “I have learned to read the signs and dreams of the rock, I have added in my own, I have broken all of the rock to pieces”.
