A 2-0 win for Delemont over Servette Geneva has brought an end to the opening weekend's Swiss football league action.

Servette were the only team among this season’s championship contenders to lose their opening match.

In front of 4,220 spectators, Samuel Ojong from Cameroon scored the first goal in the 30th minute, while Manuel di Zenzo netted the ball in the 52nd minute.

Grasshoppers take lead

Grasshoppers head the table after beating FC Wil 4-1 on Saturday. Argentinian player Antonio Barijho scored the second goal in the 19th minute to put the Zurich club on the road to victory.

Apart from Mordekus’ impressive goal, which he scored in the 52nd minute, Wil did not get going during the match and were the weaker team throughout.

Basel off to winning start

Defending champions FC Basel started off on the right foot when they defeated FC Aarau 1-0 in the first real match of the season.

Basel asserted their authority on Saturday in the first half, when Christian Gimenez headed the ball into the goal in the 19th minute.

In front of 10,000 fans, both football teams proved that they had not forgotten how to play a good match over the break.

Aarau had three good chances, but Basel’s goalie Pascal Zuberbühler was equal to the challenge.

In other matches, Neuchâtel beat Thun 2-1, and Lucerne scrambled a 2-2 draw against Young Boys.
