Marvulli victorious in Zurich
The young Swiss cyclist, Franco Marvulli, has pedalled to victory in the Autosprint in day five of Zurich's six-day cycling race.
Marvulli, who was cycling with team- mate Alexander Aschenbach, sped to the finish line seeing off competition from Switzerland’s Bruno Risi and Belgium’s Matthew Gilmore.
75km Américaine Handicap Race
In the longer 75km Américaine Handicap race, Belgium’s Etienne De Wilde and Germany’s Lars Teutenberg were the winning duo finishing in a time of one hour 24 minutes and 42 seconds.
The triumphant pair clocked an average speed of 53.1km per hour on the track in Zurich’s Hallenstadion.
The German duo, Gerd Dörich and Mario Vonhof came in second with reigning Olympic champion McGrory and naturalised Australian Gilmore finishing third.
The Swiss pairing of Bruno Risi and Kurt Beschart, who won Thurday’s 100km race, finished the shorter 75km stretch in fourth place.
Indoor track
During the six-day race, the cyclists compete on an indoor track over six successive evenings racing in teams of two, which means that only one rider needs to be in the race at any one time.
The cyclist, who is not racing, circles slowly at the top of the track and waits for his partner to throw him into the race by a hand sling.
The race is won by gaining points in sprints that are held every 20 laps and by gaining laps on the other riders.
