Snow snarls air and ground traffic in Ticino

Fresh snow wreaked havoc on traffic in the southern canton of Ticino on Wednesday morning, forcing the cancellation of flights at the region's main airport near Lugano.

The primary motorway between the town of Chiasso, on the Swiss-Italian border, and Airolo was blocked in both directions, authorities said.

Some public transport was delayed by up to half an hour, although Swiss Federal Railways noted its trains would operate according to the normal timetable. Above-average numbers of passengers had been counted, it said.

In Italian-speaking Switzerland, between 30 and 40 centimetres of snow is expected at higher altitudes. In the western city of Geneva, light snow should continue until Thursday.

The capital, Bern, and the resort town of Interlaken will see snow tapering off toward the end of the week, possibly turning into rain.
