Authorities shut down virtual casino network

Internet casinos are prohibited under Swiss law Keystone Archive

Swiss authorities have shut down a network of Internet-based casinos operating out of canton Ticino.

An investigation into the operation of the virtual casinos has so far led to the seizure of more than SFr5 million ($2.95 million) in illegal earnings. Twelve people have been ordered to pay individual fines of up to SFr206,000.

The setting up of Internet casinos is prohibited under Swiss law, even if the headquarters of the business are located outside Switzerland.

The probe, launched by the Federal Gaming Board more than a year ago, revealed how those behind the online casino had installed computers providing access to the service in 13 bars and restaurants in canton Ticino.

Splitting the profit

Profits were split between the respective bar and restaurant owners, and those who managed the casino network.

Several bank accounts containing sums of up to SFr4.2 million have been frozen in connection with the investigation.

Federal law prohibits the use of any electronic communication network for the purpose of operating virtual casinos. Those found guilty risk a maximum prison sentence of one year.

The government can also impose a maximum fine of SFr1 million on anyone found to have contravened laws governing casinos and gambling in Switzerland.
