Peter Schibli becomes new Editor-in-Chief of swissinfo.ch
Peter Schibli became Editor-in-Chief of swissinfo.ch, the international swissinfo internet platform, effective 1 January 2008. Schibli, who holds a doctorate in law, succeeds Christoph Heri, who will be retiring on 31 March 2008 after a 30-year media career, the last six years of which have been spent with the swissinfo editorial team.

As a journalist and multimedia specialist, Peter Schibli joined Basler Zeitung in 1986, variously serving as its Germany and USA correspondents. From 2000 onwards, he built up the newspaper’s baz-online website, leading the online editorial team and being appointed to the Editorial Board in 2004. He joined swissinfo.ch as a project manager and member of the Editorial Board in March 2007.
Focus on multimedia and user loyalty
The role of the new Editor-in-Chief is to turn the service remit adopted by the Federal Council into a living journalistic service. Swissinfo.ch was set up to explain Switzerland and its particular characteristics to the international community in an easily understandable way using words, sound and pictures. Peter Schibli aims to position swissinfo.ch as a leading nine-language news and information platform not only for expatriate Swiss, but also for an international readership with an interest in Switzerland.
Schibli will therefore concentrate on making the best possible use of the web platform’s multimedia capabilities to convey its content and to strengthen the loyalty of its users. The first projects in this vein have been the highly popular election blog Wahlblog 2007, the relaunch of the English site and the introduction of an English-language audio podcast. The swissinfo editorial team receives regular training in the preparation of top-quality audiovisual content for the international news platform.
