Hingis breezes through in Hamburg

Hingis kept her eye firmly on the ball against Valero Keystone

Swiss tennis star Martina Hingis has had no difficulty booking a place in the quarter-finals of the latest WTA tournament in Hamburg.

The world number four made light work of Spain’s Cristina Torres Valero on Thursday, easing past the world number 40 to complete a one-sided 6-1, 6-0 victory.

Hingis needed just 41 minutes and one match ball to clinch the match.

On Friday the Swiss number one is due to meet Daniela Hantuchova (WTA 14), a member of the Slovakian Fed Cup team which beat Switzerland 3-2 last weekend.

Hingis, who did not play in the Fed Cup fixture, will be looking for revenge of a more personal kind against the Slovakian number who stunned the tennis world with her win over Hingis at the Indian Wells final in March.

If Hingis can see off Hantuchova she is then likely to come up against old foe and current world number one Venus Williams in the Hamburg semi-finals.
