Record number of animal trophies confiscated
The authorities have confiscated several hundred trophies of endangered animal species from a collector in western Switzerland.
The Federal Customs Office said investigators found about 300 objects, including rhino teeth, tortoise shells, snake skins and a crocodile as part of a three-year investigation.
Experts say it is the biggest haul of illegal wild animal trophies in Switzerland.
The collector who faces a fine of up to SFr60,000 ($59,435) is said to have acquired about 600 trophies over the past years.
About 200 objects were apparently imported illegally and 350 of them were sold on over the internet and mail.
Switzerland is the depositary state of Cites, an international agreement to ensure trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten their survival.
