Federer powers through to US Open quarterfinals

Switzerland’s Roger Federer has sailed through his fourth round match in the US Open beating 36th-ranked Juan Monaco of Argentina in straight sets.

Taking the court at around midnight, the world number three made light work of the match, winning 6-1, 6-2, 6-0.

Federer took 18 minutes to win the first set, and hurried through the third when a light mist threatened to halt play. He had 42 winners and only 21 unforced errors against Monaco in a match that took one hour and 22 minutes.

He plays Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarterfinals. It will be a rematch of their Wimbledon encounter this summer which Tsonga won after dropping the first two sets.

Caroline Wozniacki’s three-set victory earlier in the night had delayed the start of the men’s match.
