Home comforts continue for St Gallen

St Gallen's Marc Zellweger looks for a way past Zurich's Wilco Hellinga Keystone

A single goal, scored by Brazilian midfielder Jairo in first half injury time, was enough to maintain an impressive run of home form for the defending champions. St Gallen have now won their last seven matches at home and have not suffered a league defeat on their own soil in almost two years.

Marcel Koller's side had plenty of opportunities to make the scoreline more emphatic. Ivan Dal Santo and Ionel Gane both missed good chances in the first half, while Jairo's compatriot Jefferson was unfortunate to see a header rebound off the Zurich goal.

After an unexpectedly strong start to the championship round, FC Zurich's title hopes are fading fast. Gilbert Gress's side have taken just one point from their last three games and are now five points adrift of the leaders.

On Saturday four teams will be looking to leap above FC Zurich and into the top half of the table. Basel are set to take on Sion, while Servette play host to Lugano - all four sides are currently level on 23 points.
